If your flight lands after midnight, use the local date you actually need the hotel room as the check-in date on your hotel reservation for a visa. But there is a catch: arriving at a hotel at 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday does not automatically mean you can check into a room reserved for Tuesday afternoon. If you need to sleep immediately, you may need a reservation beginning Monday, with the hotel informed of your late arrival. Get this right before ordering a confirmation PDF; it is one of the easiest ways to make an otherwise sensible travel plan look inconsistent.
Picture a traveler flying from Istanbul to Paris. The aircraft is scheduled to touch down at Charles de Gaulle at 12:40 a.m. on November 10. By the time baggage is collected and a taxi reaches the hotel, it is almost 2 a.m. The traveler has a four-night Paris visit in mind and needs accommodation details for a travel file. Should the booking say November 9–13 or November 10–14? The answer depends on when the traveler expects to use the room, not simply the date printed next to the flight's arrival.
