Why there is no universal expiry time
Airlines apply ticketing deadlines to unticketed reservations. The deadline can depend on the carrier, route, fare, departure date and booking channel. A supplier may give an expected window, but it does not control every airline system involved.
This is why an exact promise should be treated cautiously. The most useful information is the reservation’s current status and the time at which it will be presented.
What can shorten the active period
An airline can release space when a ticketing deadline passes. Duplicate reservations, schedule changes, inventory controls or inconsistent passenger details can also affect a record. A codeshare itinerary may depend on synchronization between more than one carrier.
- Airline ticketing deadline
- Departure date approaching
- Duplicate or conflicting reservations
- Schedule or flight-number changes
- Partner-airline record synchronization
Time the order around the actual check
Work from the appointment, submission or departure date. Leave enough time to review and correct the document, while keeping the gap short enough that the temporary record is likely to remain active.
If a document must be mailed or submitted long before review, ask whether an itinerary rather than a live lookup is expected. If the recipient may verify it at a later date, a short-lived reservation may be unsuitable.
